Leave the Past Behind and Look to the Future

“Forget the former things; do not dwell in the past. See that I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up, do you not perceive it ? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Isaiah 43:18–19

Sometimes the hardest part of moving forward is letting go of what is behind us. Past mistakes, regrets, hurts, broken relationships, and all the things we wish we could change.

I know that for me, there have been times that I have wished that I could change the past. Even though I can’t change it, I can learn from it and choose not to live there.

We do not have to let our past control our future, and choose to not become victims of what happened to us.

We don’t have to carry yesterday into every tomorrow.

God calls us to leave the past behind and instead press on to what is ahead, and the beautiful thing is that God’s Grace covers the things that we wish we could have done differently.

So let us turn our eyes forward and walk into a new day with him.

Journaling for the week

Every day this week ask Jesus in prayer. What is one thing that you need to leave behind from your past today? When you leave it behind, do not go back.

A guided prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
Today I choose to let go of the past. No longer looking back at former things, instead choosing to fix my eyes on you and all the new things that you are doing in my life.
Help me to walk forward with you, knowing that your grace is enough for each new day and that your plans for my life are good.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

A faith action for the week

This week think of someone that is connected to your past, that has caused pain. Pray for them, forgive them and give it to God.

After the letter

Don’t rush off — sit with it a moment.

A letter read together is different from a letter read alone. This is the quiet table where the letter keeps going.

Where did this find you?

If a line of this letter met you somewhere real, tell Alice. A single sentence is enough — she reads every reply herself.
